I tend to find myself using text editors all the time. I used to be a huge fan of PS Pad. Not only does it feature incredibly useful features like syntax highlighting and macros but it is provided free of charge by the author.
I'm a big fan of open source or free ware solutions. However I've found myself more and more turning to Notepad++. It is also a freeware solution but it has a few advantages over PS Pad, one being it is still being actively developed, but the main one is the region collapsing. When you are trawling through lines of code it is really useful to be able to collapse sections that you do not need to see so you can more easily focus on the bits you do need to work on.
Anyway, check them both out and choose your own favourite
